What Colonialism Built

is an ongoing series of place-based tours examining the history of colonialism in the land, the law, and the people who inhabit both, past and present.

What Colonialism Built:

The Slave Trade in New Orleans

Walking tour | 90 minutes | French Quarter

$65 per person

New Orleans was one of the most significant geographies for the slave trade in North America. What that built legally, economically, physically, and inside the people who lived through it still exists all around you today.

This tour uses this part of colonial history to cultivate the ability to look at what presents itself as natural and neutral and ask who built it, what was required to do so, and what does this have to do with us today?

Begins at the Riverfront across from Jackson Square. Ends at Congo Square.

Please wear comfortable shoes — the route includes uneven terrain. Water is strongly recommended given the New Orleans climate.
